In November 2020, during the height of Covid-related travel restrictions, we decided to escape our busy lives in the city for a weekend of winetasting in North Georgia. After enjoying time at Cenita Winery, Yonah Mountain Winery and Tantrum Brewing, and strolling through the streets fo Helen, it became apparent that we needed a place of our own in the beautiful mountains of North Georgia. A week later, twin sisters, JoAnna Weinman and her husband Eric, and Jennifer Yoder and her husband Brandon, found the perfect property! Nestled on over 11 acres on Skitts Mountain, lies the oldest vineyard in the state of Georgia. With vines more than 35 years old, this vineyard was once used by Habersham Winery to grow cabernet and merlot grapes. We have been renovating the house, barn, vineyard and surrounding land for the last year. We have been up most weekends with our kids and dogs working and also finding some time for fun and adventure (below is a picture of us at Cottage Winery, we also love Cenita and Yonah Mountain, all within a 10 minute drive).
Though our contractor has done much of the heavy work, we have pulled up flooring, drywall, bathtubs, tile and then laid flooring, painted, planted, burned many piles of leaves and brush. We have handpruned the vines in the cold of winter with guidance from UGA Viticulture and our local Hall and White County Extention Agents. We have purchased two tractors and learned how to use them to clear between the vines and with the hard work came grapes! This was such an exciting accomplishment. Every weekend we spend up at our vineyard, we feel so blessed and just pinch ourselves. The rain on the metal roof, the morning fogs and the amazing sunsets over the mountaintops, is just truly amazing.
